Father Son Dream Car EV

Tagged with:

Now when you first look at the following picture I’m sure the first thought may not be “Dream Car”…

but then again it wasn’t $60K of your money and months of design, thought, sweat, and work to create it. I know what you might be thinking, what a waste of money, etc… but it was a father creating something from spare parts with his two sons. I hardly see the waste of time or pointlessness of that. From the article in the Daily Herald

Zanis would like to see American car manufacturers work faster in developing an electric car. He doesn’t believe the focus should be on converting a gasoline-driven car, but rather building a frame for an electric car.

I couldn’t agree more. And what Zanis is doing will help tremendously. It will spur interest, design ideas, new concepts, and get people talking about these vehicles. It’s going to make GM wish they didn’t get rid of the electric car.

Creating Ethanol for $1 a Gallon From Anything Organic

Tagged with:

… Yes! Anything! That means, corn husks, trash, you name it. This great news comes from a Wired Magazine article:

A biofuel startup in Illinois can make ethanol from just about anything organic for less than $1 per gallon, and it wouldn’t interfere with food supplies, company officials said.

Coskata, which is backed by General Motors and other investors, uses bacteria to convert almost any organic material, from corn husks (but not the corn itself) to municipal trash, into ethanol.

“It’s not five years away, it’s not 10 years away. It’s affordable, and it’s now,” said Wes Bolsen, the company’s vice president of business development.

This is pretty hug news. Imagine a system of energy where local cities and towns become closed energy loops. The waste we produce is turned into fuel for cars that is only shipped to local gas stations. This minimizes waste and increase efficiency across the board.

The other thing it makes me think of is the last scene in “Back to the Future” where Doc drives up and refuels his car with trash from Marty’s trash can. With the technology presented above this idea is a lot closer than I first thought when I saw the movie.

California to Sue EPA

Tagged with:

and for a darn good reason too!

As promised, “California sued the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday for denying its first-in-the-nation greenhouse gas limits on cars, trucks and SUVs.” At least fifteen states will support California in the lawsuit, including 13 of those that have either adopted or are in the process of adopting the rules.

Good for them I say and the 13 other states! It’s about time someone stepped up to Bush’s cronies, or for that matter showed an interest in caring about the environment. Most of what Bush has done (which is actually nothing up to this point) and talked about doing has gone from denial, to making sure the science is correct (another form of denial) to accepting the science is correct… but still doing nothing… Yes it is confusing. How you can see Global Warming as a problem and accept the science that shows it, and yet do nothing is beyond me?

It’s obvious Bush has not yet seen any real evidence for Global Warming. If he has, he would know most of this already. Global Warming is a serious issue that needs immediate attention.

It also appears this Cali lawsuit isn’t the only thing the head of the EPA should be worried about…

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, chaired by California democrat Henry Waxman — a prominent critic of industry influence on the Bush administration’s science policies — has launched an investigation into the EPA’s rejection of California’s attempt to reduce automotive greenhouse gas emissions.

Good Ol’ Waxman is on the hunt to get to the bottom of things. If you missed the whole issue of why Cali is suing, read this LA Times article.

The Bush administration Wednesday denied California’s bid to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles, dealing a blow to the state’s attempts to combat global warming and prompting an immediate vow from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to take the decision to court.

Environmental Protection Agency administrator Stephen L. Johnson denied the state’s request to implement its own landmark law, noting that an energy bill signed by President Bush earlier in the day would go a long way toward reducing emissions throughout the United States. The bill provides the most significant increase in vehicle fuel economy standards in more than three decades.

Basically the Bush Girly-men are trumping state rights by saying Cali has no right to set their own limits, look at the bold section right above to see the EPAs argument. WTF kind of reason is that?!?! It makes no difference how good the Federal bill is. If a state wants to set their own limits on top of the Feds, it’s their decision. As the Governator states:

It is unconscionable that the federal government is keeping California and nineteen other states from adopting these standards. They are ignoring the will of millions of people who want their government to take action in the fight against global warming. That’s why, at the very first legal opportunity, we’re suing to reverse the US EPA’s wrong decision. California has always been a leader in protecting the environment, and we will do everything in our power to continue that proud tradition.

Well just chalk “State’s Rights” up on the chalkboard of what makes Bush the worst president in history… oh wait. We already have chalked that one up.

Toyota’s Concept Hybrid

Tagged with:

Toyota has a new hybrid they’re showcasing at the Detroit Auto Show (and hopefully the Chicago one too as I am going to go to it  ). It’s called the A-Bat Hybrid Compact Pickup Truck Concept and has some friggin cool features…

A rigid center console houses a portable power pack that offers both AC and DC for a wide variety of applications including powering tools, electrical gear while camping, a laptop computer, small appliances or assisting a vehicle jump start.

Inside the A-BAT has a retractable portable navigation unit with a seven-inch diagonal screen and Wi-Fi internet. Other advanced features include a port for portable device assistant synchronization and a hard drive for digital music.

That last part really sounds geeky and cool! And I was just talking with a friend yesterday about the lack of integration of MP3 capabilities in cars and car stereos. The other idea here that interests me about this is Toyota’s idea of integrating cool technology with Hybrids. It’s a smart way of getting people that wouldn’t care about Hybrids or the environment interested. I know of people that buy Prius’ because they are cool and geeky and not really for the eco-friendly technology or designs.

Which is what more auto manufacturers should be doing, showing the cool side of being eco-friendly…

Naturally Yours is Coming!!

Tagged with:

Happy New Years everyone! I hope your holiday break was great and you had some fun.

Trying to get back to regular posting now I am happy to report that Normal, IL is getting a Naturally Yours grocery store. Apparently this is only the second store in this new chain. Either way I’m pretty excited as they are going to move in pretty close to where I’m at. Kroger is really close to us already, but like most grocery stores their selection of organic food is pretty weak.

Another cool thing according to the Pantagraph article article linked above is Naturally Yours also tries to get local grocers as much as possible. Something I really appreciate from restaurants and grocers I visit.

Strong Stance Hillary, but not Quite Strong Enough

Tagged with:

Hillary’s strong stance on global warming issues has lead to her putting out some new plans if she were president

Clinton is calling for an improvement in the fleet-wide fuel economy standard to the tune of 55 miles per gallon by the year 2030.

[…]

Though questions of plausibility linger, Clinton has outlined several specific measures to achieve the high benchmarks, including the issuing of $20 billion of “Green Vehicle Bonds” for U.S. automakers to use in retooling their plants with technology that would output more efficient vehicles. Clinton would also grant a $10,000 consumer tax credit as a purchase incentive for plug-in hybrids. She would also allocate $2 billion for investment in battery research and add 100,000 plug-in hybrids to the federal fleet by 2015.

I wish I could say I think this will be enough, but I just can’t. While I like what Clinton is doing and I will never knock it, it just sucks that what she proposes is the best yet, and it really just falls short of what we need to be doing. More and more scientists are ever growing worried, and it still seems people just don’t care. It seems people would rather worry about short term costs than long term sustainability for some odd reason.

What I hope will happen, is that the next presidential candidate will come in from a platform of what they are going to do, but drastically step up the measures once in office.

Its Blogging Action Day

And I just heard about it today from my coworker.

So here is an article on Bush and Climate Change:

By setting this goal, we acknowledge there is a problem,” President Bush told representatives of 17 nations attending the Major Economies Meeting on Energy Security and Climate Change held in Washington, D.C., this week. “We must lead the world to produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions, and we must do it in a way that does not undermine economic growth or prevent nations from delivering greater prosperity for their people.” The nations represented at the conference emit more than 80 percent of the globe’s greenhouse gases

Right… so you recognize there is a problem, and to solve this problem you don’t create any plan and push off the responsibility to the next president. Wonderful! Oh, and don’t forget the claim that we “must not undermine economic growth.” It’s a ridiculous claim to make since the outcome of not doing anything is disastrous.

Basically as the article states, Bush squandered a great opportunity to actually put forth measures that would have an impact on Climate Change. So below I offer the promo video of Blogging Action Day and a link to DOFs post on this
