Clonezilla is Coming!!

No it’s a good thing. I’m not talking about Godzilla…
A series of posts are on the way introducing Clonezilla, Discussions of Pros and Cons and a comparision to Ghost, Clonezilla setup for single system cloning or small time cloning operations, and Clonezilla server setup. The last two will be more technical in nature and all will be linked together and connected to one another.
I want to present Clonezilla as a viable alternative to Ghost and present it’s shortcomings as I have been a fanboy of Ghost for a long time. But for those not able or willing to shell out the dough for Ghost, Clonezilla make be just fine. Or for those not wanting to deal with floppies (why Ghost didn’t put an end to this YEARS ago I have no idea).
But home users may come to love it, as I will once I upgrade the storage space on my file server!

Welcome to my blog! Topics tend to focus on Science and Technology, but I throw in personal stuff too. I hope you enjoy!

I found this as I was seraching for info on Clonezilla. I have to say that I am impressed by how easy it is to CZ. The company I work for (20+ employees) has a license for Ghost, but I found that it took too much work and effort to get it to work properly. This really came to light when I tried CZ for the first time. I burned the CD, created a share on my file server, inserted the CD, rebooted and I was already half done! I set CZ to save the disk as an image, told it to use the SAMBA option, input my network settings and I was done. Compare that to the hours it took me to configure the GhostCast server to work properly (and I never could) and I was an instant convert. I understand that Ghost has many more features, but for a shop my size where I only need to save machines to image and occastionally restore them, it ROCKS!

Thanks for the comment Derek! And you couldn’t be more right on… Even for larger shops, the need for Ghost starts to dwindle fast. I have more posts on Clonezilla coming, just trying to find the time right now.
